Do you know the most important components of a gaming desktop? How much RAM do you need for gaming, and does too much RAM increase gaming performance? Find out the answers to these questions and more from our buying guide below.
In this section, we are discussing the three most important components of a gaming PC: CPU, graphics card, and RAM. Find out about their significance and how each part contributes to providing you the best gaming experience for the money you are paying.
When it comes to gaming, the processor wars are always between Intel and AMD. But Intel's popularity is so huge that the crowd straight away goes for it. Understand that both chipmakers have a long line of top-notch processors. Here is how you can make a choice. For a given price range, AMD processors are smarter and faster than Intel processors.
How powerful a processor do you need? Let's take 2K gaming, for example. We will compare Core i3 10100F and the Ryzen 5 5600X—both of them paired with an RTX 3070. The Ryzen 5 5600X is more expensive and powerful than the i3 10100F. But when it comes to FPS, the difference is negligible in most cases. You can save a few thousand bucks there and invest that in a more powerful graphics card.
A graphics card's responsibility is to boost the rendering speed of images, videos, and animations. The two top graphics chip (GPU) manufacturers are NVIDIA and AMD. They have their own line of graphics cards, but they also sell their GPU design to other manufacturers like ASUS, MSI, and ZOTAC, who make graphics cards that may offer extra features and better performance.
These "tweaks" could be a better cooling solution, flashy lights, more memory, factory overclock, etc. Of course, the price will go up too. Checking if the graphics card supports ray-tracing is also important. Currently, NVIDIA's 20 and 30 series and AMD's RX 6000 chips are the only ones that come with dedicated hardware for ray tracing, making them capable of handling complex effects.
Ray tracing is worth your money. If performance is a priority for you, sacrifice on a fancy cabinet, RGB lights, and aftermarket coolers for a powerful ray tracing supported card.
How much RAM do you actually need? To play the most graphically demanding games released so far, you only need 8 GB of RAM. But, nowadays, even mid-range gaming desktops come with 16 GB of RAM. Since RAM requirements for video games are increasing, the extra RAM will keep you ready to play new releases in the near future.
You can determine the amount of RAM you need by checking the recommended system requirements of the video games you want to play. But is 32 GB of RAM overkill? If you are streaming on YouTube and Twitch, recording your gameplay at 4K, and chatting on discord, you would definitely need 32 GB of RAM. And you won't be needing a RAM upgrade for a long time.
There are mainly three types of storage available: Hard drive (HDD), SATA Solid State Drive (SSD), and NVMe SSD. Your gaming desktop will have any two of these. Typically, 1 TB of HDD and 120 - 500 GB of SATA SSD or NVMe SSD will be present inside. The performance of each storage type varies considerably.
Solid state drives are the fastest, and the NVMe variant is faster than SATA SSD. It is best to install the operating system and games in the SSD since it improves the loading times drastically. PC games, nowadays, demand a lot of storage space. If you plan on installing more than one game, we recommend at least 250 GB of SSD.
Part of what defines a desktop as a "gaming desktop" is the flashy lights and the over-the-top PC case design. You don't have to be a streamer to make a statement with your gaming PC. But here are a few things to remember. Graphic cards, RAMs, and cooler fans that come with LED lighting usually cost more than their regular counterparts.
If you are on a tighter budget or want the best performing gaming PC for the money you are paying, ditch all the pretentious extras. Some websites (ANT PC, THE MVP, etc.) even let you customize the gaming desktop you are buying. This will let you replace the extravagant ones with more affordable ones.

We hope you found your dream gaming PC. Computer hardware manufacturers come up with new products and upgrades in the blink of an eye. If you have been observing the trends in this industry, you may know how fast the prices are dropping too. You need a powerful desktop to meet the demands of modern video games. Make sure your choice is future-proof!
