Do you know the typical almond content in commercially available almond milks? What about the additives companies normally add to their products? Do you think they are harmful to our health? Find out answers to these questions from our buying guide below.
A 1 liter carton of ready-made almond milk contains roughly 2 - 6% almonds. The rest is water. That's right! Almonds are expensive, and companies use as little of them as possible to make almond milk affordable for the public. But you need a product that offers good value for money too.
Check the ingredients list to find out the percentage of almonds present. The whole point of checking the almond content is to understand the quantity of nutrients present in it. Alternatively, you can read the nutrition table.
But, if the almond milk is fortified, checking the nutrition table won't give you the particulars you are looking for. More on fortified almond milk in the next section.
The way companies and influencers promote almond milk makes it seem like it is packed with nutrients. This nut milk is a good source of vitamin E and calcium. You get 16.5 mg of Vitamin E and 450 mg of calcium per cup of 240 ml. But the amount of rest of the nutrients is not that impressive.
A cup of almond milk contains just 1 gram of protein. Compared to 7 - 8 grams of protein in cow or soy milk, that's way too low. Other nutrients, such as Vitamin A, B, D, phosphorus, and potassium, are also present in comparatively modest amounts (provides just 2 - 4 % of Daily Value).
Companies make up for this by adding a premix (mixture of vitamins, minerals, etc.) to the almond milk. For those who are considering almond milk as a dairy alternative, some brands add extra protein too. Most of the time, it's soy protein. But check the ingredients list anyway because companies may use lactose-free whey or casein protein also.
Not everyone likes the taste of almonds. Don't worry. Almond milk is available in a variety of flavors, like chocolate, vanilla, coffee, etc. Flavored and unflavored almond milk has almost the same amount of nutrients.
The flavoring could be natural or nature-identical. Even if it is natural, the health benefits you get are nearly zero since the percentage of the flavoring ingredient present will be too low. Almond/badam flavored raw (dairy) milk is also available in the market. So don't mistake "almond flavored" milk for real almond milk.
If you turned to almond milk as part of your "eat healthy" resolution, check the list of additives present in it. Other than almonds and water, almond milks could contain one or more of the following: sugar, sweeteners, emulsifiers (to keep fat and water from separating), stabilizers (keeps added nutrients, and almond milk from separating), and preservatives.
Nowadays, people don't need to be educated about the adverse effects of sugar. It's best to stay away from sugar-laden almond milks if you are watching your weight. Unsweetened store-bought almond milks are low in calories, containing an average of just 70 kcal per serving of 200ml.
Almond milks are also sweetened with calorie-free sweeteners. But the drawback is, you won't be in control of how much sweetness you want. Emulsifiers, stabilizers, and preservatives are only present in permitted amounts, so don't worry about side effects. But check the ingredients list if you are known to be allergic to any.
Considering almond milk as a replacement for dairy milk? Leslie Beck, a registered dietician, is here with some valuable tips to educate you. Watch the video to learn about the benefits and downsides of opting for almond milk. Leslie covers some important topics like:
You can consume almonds in many ways like almond milk, raw almond, or you can apply almond oil on hair as well. All our buying guides are detailed, so check the links to inform yourself in other almond related products.
Here is everything in a nutshell. The first thing to check while buying almond milk from the store is the percentage of almonds present in it. Almond milk is a good source of Vitamin E. But that's it. The rest of the nutritional profile is not that impressive.
But don't worry. Almond milks with added nutrients are easily available. Don't forget to check the rest of the additives to confirm that you are not allergic to any. Normally, the additives are preservatives, emulsifiers, stabilizers, and acidity regulators.
