Do you work on a desktop for long hours and often experience insomnia? If yes, then you are not only the one who’s facing this; it has become the global problem of this generation. With all the gadgets around and the digital world reaching its peak, we are exposed to the screen or blue light emitted by the screen more than ever.
Did you know that sunlight is the major source of blue light? Yes, it is, and the natural blue light has the shortest wavelength but has more energy than the visible light rays. It helps boost alertness, sharpens memory, and maintains circadian rhythm, the body’s natural wakeup, and sleep cycle.
Our body needs an external signal to maintain this circadian rhythm; during sunrise, the blue light alerts and helps us to wake up. After sunset, when the blue light fades, the body produces melatonin allowing you to fall asleep.
Now the sources of blue light have increased, making us more exposed to it than ever before. Excess exposure to blue light can cause insomnia and digital eye strain, disrupting the natural circadian rhythm.
Other sources of artificial blue light include CFL bulbs, LED lights and televisions, computer monitors, smartphones, and the list goes on. They produce less blue light than the sun, but, again, it comes down to how long do you face them. An extended exposure might hinder the production of melatonin, hampering your sleep.
One of the solutions is blue light blocking glasses or anti-blue light glasses; these are like regular glasses that we wear but have a blue light filter coating. It helps to gain our natural circadian rhythm while improving our sleep by filtering the blue light emitted from the screen.
Nowadays, we continuously look at the screen either for work, study, or casual surfing. It creates several uniform pixels, which causes headaches or gives eyestrain. For that, there are some blue light blocking glasses that help reduce eyestrain and headache, giving less stress to your eyes.
You can consider many factors before buying these glasses, like the types of lenses, anti-glare coating, and more, to get a perfect one for yourself.
The lenses of blue light blocking glasses don’t necessarily have to be blue. In contrast, there are many colors, like yellow, orange, red, and more. So, check out which one do you want.
Clear lenses are the most common type that filters 20-40% blue light and helps regain the circadian rhythm. These are ideal for students or those who don’t have to work for long hours on screen compared to the office workers.
Your ideal screen time should be around 3 to 4 hours per day if you want to go for clear lenses. Also, your body needs some amount of blue light during the daytime, so clear lenses maintain the balance without distorting the color.
If you’re a programmer, content creator, video editor, professional gamer, or into any profession that demands a lot of work on desktop, then you should prefer yellow color lenses because they filter 75% blue light.
Yellow color lenses work similarly with clear lenses but filter more efficiently. They don’t filter all the blue light, but only an optimum amount. So, your ideal time should be around 5 to 6 hours per day if you want to use these.
Orange Lenses filter 98-99% blue light, but they are not as effective as they seem to be. They only filter blue light in the daytime, and you don’t require this much filtration in the day because your body or eyes need some blue light in the morning to stay fit and active.
You can wear orange lenses for a short duration or while going out; for example, you can consider them while playing cricket or driving when the sun’s too bright in summers.
Red Lenses filter out 100% blue light, not only blue; it can filter green and UV light as well. At night your body doesn’t require blue light; thus, red lenses help improve sleep by maintaining circadian rhythm by filtering out maximum blue light.
It has other benefits too, like they improve visual depth, reduce eye strain, and give a good contrast. If you work in a dark room or a dark studio for more than 5 hours, then you can go for these.
Green and blue lenses also offer excellent protection from blue light, and they are suitable for various lighting conditions. Green lenses provide greater clarity in all kinds of lighting like sunny, partly sunny, foggy, and dim.
You can wear them the whole day because they give a better contrast even in low light. Furthermore, they have an anti-glare feature, meaning that it helps reduce reflection; hence, they are best if you drive for more than 3 to 4 hours or more frequently.
Blue lens is perfect for snowy and foggy weather as they enhance and define color perception efficiently. They are trendier than other lenses and also come with anti-glare glasses. You can also consider them for outdoor activities such as skiing, golf, fishing, and other water sports.
Anti-glare or anti-reflective is a coating that eliminates reflections from the front and back surface of the glasses. Some of them are made up of hydrophobic treatment, meaning it prevents water formation on the surface.
These are particularly suitable during these times, where the lens becomes foggy because of wearing a mask. There are many benefits of using anti-glare glasses; they make vision sharper and more precise, reduce eye strain, increasing your productivity while working on a desktop.
Along with skin, your eyes also need protection from UV rays. UV rays can harm your eyes in many ways; it can cause cataract, damage the retina, and many other eye problems.
Look for blue light blocking glasses that give 100% protection from UV rays. You can also go with UV400, which will provide 100% protection from UVA and UVB rays.
