If you search online, you will see different models of webcams with varying functions that might confuse you. Down below, we present everything you need to know in a non-technical reader-friendly manner that will help you decide which model to buy.
The first point to consider while buying a webcam would be its image and video quality. These things are dependent on the resolution of a webcam and its frame per second (FPS). Higher-resolution means more pixels which translates to better image and video quality.
Most webcams today have a higher resolution of 720 and 1080p, where p stands for progressive scan. If you attend a lot of online meetings, not only as a participant but as a host as well on Zoom or Skype or even stream live, then we suggest you go for 1080p as it would make you look more presentable while giving a clearer picture of your face.
Look for 4k if you want the latest standardized high resolution, better video quality, and lossless zoom. 4k is usually used by people who record a video. Lastly, you can also choose based on pixels. Look for 1 million pixels for casual video calling with your friends and family. But for any professional work, we recommend having a webcam with more than 2 million pixels.
Another aspect that determines the quality of the image is the frames per second (FPS), also known as frame rate, which is the number of images captured by a webcam in a second. In simple words, you can keep in mind that the higher the FPS better the image quality.
Some of the available frame rates in the market are 15, 30, 60, and 120 fps. For your reference, FPS 15 means it captures 15 times in a second. Keep in mind that you need to have a high-speed internet connection for a higher frame rate.
Also, you should check out the specifications of your computer, as some computers cannot handle the processing of higher frame rates. For informal video calls, 15 fps or more would be sufficient, and for professional gamers or YouTubers, 60 fps and more is better. A higher fps would give a more natural and real image.
Most of the webcams these days carry a built-in microphone, so you do not have to buy a separate one. Good quality webcams have a stereo mic that makes your voice sound clear and more natural.
On the other hand, cheaper ones come with a built-in mono mic that is comparatively lower in quality. But, if you have higher expectations, you can choose a separate microphone or a dedicated USB mic for smoother and effective conversations and presentations.
There are three kinds of focus in a lens, manual, fixed, and auto-focus. As the name says, the manual requires you to adjust the focus of the camera manually which can be annoying and inconvenient for some.
A fixed focus is better than manual because you do not have to adjust the focus by yourself. The focus has already been set in one direction and, you only have to move to get in line with it. Both manual and fixed focus are available at quite an affordable price and sufficient for causal video chatting.
Unlike manual and fixed, lenses with autofocus automatically refocus the lens in the direction you move. It covers more range than fixed focus and gives a clear image of you to the person on the opposite side of the screen. Hence, it is suitable for people who host formal meetings a lot and professionals like YouTube content creators.
Every PC or laptop has a different operating system like Windows, Mac, or Android and, some webcams do not work with every kind of operating system. So, make sure that your selection is compatible with your laptop or personal computer.
We have recommended all types of webcams available in the market that may or may not fit with your device’s operating system, so be sure to check our specifications table before purchasing.
Now, you can easily set-up a mini office at your home. We have covered all the essential products from a desk lamp to the monitor that can enhance your work productivity. You can know more from our buying guides and product recommendations from the articles below.
Like any other technological product, buying a webcam is tough until you are not aware of the features. We assume that now you may have a better idea of your webcam purchase. But, remember, if you are planning to purchase a webcam for casual video calling, you do not have to go for an expensive model.
