When choosing your baby products, there is a division of categories as per the baby's age. Stage 1 foods are categorized for babies between 6 to 7 months old; For babies that attain the age of 7 months and above, they can consume a few more solids, and hence food recommended is categorized as stage 2 foods.
While choosing food for babies of 6 months age or known as stage 1 foods, focus only on single-ingredient foods like single fruit and vegetable purees. Choosing one ingredient helps in knowing about foods that may cause an allergic reaction to your child, and you can eliminate its consumption effectively without worrying.
You can check about choosing the first solids section to gain more information about cooking homemade single food meals and the different food items which can be added to the baby's diet like beets, bananas, peers, and more.
When the baby is more than 7 months old, around 8 to 10 months old, you can slowly add different food items that are more solid and combine different fruits and vegetables. As the babies start teething after the age of 6 months, they can gum around different foods slowly. You can introduce multiple ingredients and even small pieces of soft vegetables.
You can even add protein-based food items to the diet. Focus on adding iron-rich food items as iron is important for growth. Food items like lentils, apples, carrots, mangoes can be added to the diet.
Just as with adults, you have to keep a balance between regular meals and snacks for the babies as well. The baby may create tantrums to have the same food for every meal. Hence, a balance between both is necessary.
When selecting products off the shelf, keep a check on the ingredient list of the ones you select to be preservative and sugar-free. Processed Sugar at such an early age, as per research, shows ill-effects on the immunity system, leading to a high risk of diseases. The more natural and fresh the product is, the better for the baby.
There are various types of snacks for babies; based on their age, the texture and ingredients are different. Just as with meal-type baby foods, you must check that the ingredients are good for its health. It’s better to choose snacks like wafers or fruit purees, things that are not too filling – as they would ensure that the baby can have a proper meal later.
There are food pouches available as well nowadays, which are easy to carry and feed. Opting for ready-to-eat food in such situations can be a saver, Though do keep in mind the food items you choose contain essential nutrients and healthy ingredients.
Many artificially flavored foods are available that are not a good choice to satiate your baby's hunger as they contain ingredients like artificial colors. Many products list on the package about all-natural ingredients, give a preference to them. These are preferable as snacks or situations when you can't prepare and feed. We recommend serving ready-to-cook or homemade food over the ready-to-eat ones.
While ready-to-eat types can also be used while you’re at home, we recommend going for the need-to-cook type, as the latter tend to be much more nutritious and filling. They are fresh and warm and good to eat.
Ready-to-eat types are usually better suited as snacks due to their lack of balanced nutritional value and smaller portions, while the ones that need to be cooked meet both these needs and work well as meals.
